A Colossal Monument to Ignorance and Superstition

Johan Huibers, a Dutch contractor, has built a scale model of Noah’s ark (1/2 the length and 1/3 the width of the dimensions given in the Bible). Huibers started building the ark in December 2005, with help from his son, and it opened to the public in April 2007. He borrowed €100,000 to build it, which he hopes to recoup from admissions fees. The ark was built on a barge, so it can be moved from place to place, and contains many model animals, and even a 50 seat theater. It is a truly impressive piece of work. It is a shame, though, to see all this talent and effort wasted in pursuit of a fairy tale.

Huibers is now working on a full size ark.

I like the way they think they know what the ark (if it even existed) actually looked like. I'd like to see him build the actual ark out of wood using tools from several thousand years ago. That would be fun.

I'm dumfounded.
As someone who builds boats, let me say this: that ain't no boat. Standard wood frame construction as used in houses? with fiberglass insulation yet? It's a house on a barge.
What kind of functional equivalent of thought goes on in these people's minds?
